Advanced Cell Technology Applauds Governor Schwarzenegger for Directing $150 Million Loan to Fund Stem Cell Research; Further Positions California as World Leader in Field of Regenerative Medicine

William M. Caldwell, IV, Chief Executive Officer of Advanced Cell Technology, Inc.
today praised Governor Schwarzenegger for directing the state to issue a loan of up to $150 million to the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). CIRM is the state agency responsible for disbursing $3 billion for stem cell research to California universities and research institutions. "Governor Schwarzenegger has further positioned California to lead the nation in the promising field of regenerative medicine," said Mr. Caldwell. "I believe we are now one step closer to developing therapies for devastating diseases and injuries such as heart disease, cancer, macular degeneration, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and diabetes, as we anticipate that this funding will provide CIRM the opportunity to move quickly into a major program of research in California." Earlier this year, Advanced Cell Technology moved its headquarters and opened a state-of-the-art R&D facility in California, which encompasses a 10,000-square-foot Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) capable laboratory. "We stand ready to partner with institutions in California to help move the science forward, and ultimately work toward translation from the laboratory to productization -- new treatments for debilitating and deadly diseases," said Mr. Caldwell. "We are completely focused on driving our key therapeutic programs into the clinic, and believe we will be among the first to treat patients with hESC-derived cell therapies."
